Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade Review

I adore this magazine. The recipes and ideas are great not to mention time conserving. Another favorite are the great tablescapes which reflect the theme or season. Every working woman should buy this magazine at least once. Her show on Food Network is addictive and thankfully she now has a magazine that is as well. We are big Sandra Lee fans at my house!Get more detail about Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade.

World of Interiors Top Quality

If you've been reading design magazines and catching home interiors stories over the years you might be closing the book and wondering what catalog house everyone's extracting their furnishings from. Every shot seems to be color coordinated to the nth and filled with flowers. Flowers! Flowers! "Cookie Cutter" for all price ranges doesn't begin to describe the conformity of the glossies right now.

Frustrated, and holding fond memories of browsing the shots of unique European estates in vintage magazines (Helene De Rothchild's dressing room!), I searched the web for WOI. Knew it was pricey but needed something real. Every month I've been rewarded with images from all over the world of the most fascinating rooms, gardens, mansions etc...that give untold inspiration and wonderment. What makes them so special is their individuality and home-owners who are unafraid to be exceptional in the true sense of the word. I marveled at a shot of a kitchen in Argentina. Tiny room, 2 old school chairs, a stone table, a window. No new fixtures, no crazy antiques. I puzzled until I understood that the editors saw the beauty of clean lines, airy simplicity and intentional composition. They had transported me to a different aesthetic leaving behind all snobbery. I asked for authenticity, lush photography, and exquisite cosmopolitan taste and...I got it. Thank you WOI.Get more detail about World of Interiors.

Revolver (1-year) Immediately

If you're into metal music then this magazine is for you...they give TRUE reviews (not like Rolling Stone). All the articles in this magazine are interesting and from different points of view. They do musician meets musician articles where they interview 2 different musicians from 2 different bands that is very interesting. They do articles about album art. They go to the past and pull up history from the older bands of metal. I LOVE THIS MAGAZINE!Get more detail about Revolver (1-year).

Games Get it now!

Games Magazine is the best puzzle magazine due to the variety and quality of the puzzles.

To the best of my knowledge, it is the only puzzle magazine that that features photographic/picture puzzles like Eyeball Benders--identify the object from pictures of common objects taken from unique angles. And it includes some great trivia puzzles.

Of course, they also feature a great selection of crossword and other pencil puzzles in a nice range of difficulty levels. I love the Games-only "World's Most Ornery Crossword" with hard clues AND easy clues if you're of a mind to access them (or if you get stuck).

In addition, the magazine features games-related articles and reviews of board games and video games. It is the source of the famous Games 100, which is their choice for the 100 best board games each year. They also publish a list of the best video games of the year.

I wait eagerly for every issue. Loads of fun!Get more detail about Games.

The Writer Order Now

I've browsed all of the popular writing magazines, and ended up choosing The Writer to be my monthly subscription. The magazine itself is great -- lots of step by steps, motivational techniques (we all need those when we get writer's block!), strategies for publication, how to be organized, list of publishers looking for submissions, interviews with professional writers. A couple of my favorite articles in the last year included netbook versus notebook, best free computer software programs for writers. I like how The Writer really covers every aspect of life as a writer, and keeps up with the times. I checked out some of the computer programs recommended and found them integral to my creative process.

It's nice to browse every month to remind myself to keep going. Also, your subscription comes with free access to The Writer website and archives -- nice to browse through if you ever are looking for help on a specific topic. The main reason I like this magazine so much is, it's a very accessible read. Lots of writers manuals are tedious to go through, but this is a good one for those of us who are hobbyists or just starting to get serious. I'm sure even more advanced writers/professionals can glean a few new ideas and techniques from these pages! Get more detail about The Writer.

Popular Woodworking (1-year) Right now

This is a premiere woodworking magazine. Editor Christopher Schwarz has done a great job changing the focus of the magazine from just power tools to a nice blend of power tools, hand tools, beginner and advanced techniques. Having said that, the renewal price I got directly from the publishers website was 25% less than what Amazon was offering.

Also, check out Woodworking Magazine. Another fantastic publication (ad free) from the same publishers.Get more detail about Popular Woodworking (1-year).

Lowest Price Ebony

Ebony magazine today is not your grandmother's magazine. It's actually very well-written and has lot of good ideas for improving your career, managing your money and understanding celebrity. I enjoy their lists of the "It women" and the "Cool Brothers." It's not just about Civil Rights anymore because, like all media, ebony changes with the times. It's very adult in focus and some of the stories are controversial. I"m glad they got rid of Housecall and created an expanded health section. I also like the careers page. All in all, good stuff.Get more detail about Ebony.

Low Price Horticulture (1-year)

I was very excited to subscribe to this magazine. I thought, "wow a magazine for a novice like myself". Yet I found it boring and not very helpful. I can find the same information on the web by using a search engine. Get more detail about Horticulture (1-year).

Cheapest MAKE: Technology on Your Time

I first found out about Make Magazine while searching for information about robotics online. I came accross complete instructions on building a light-chasing robot out of an old computer mouse on the Make magazine web site--and was immediately hooked.

The pages of these magazines are filled with fascinating projects that use items you can find around the house, at garage sales, or online. The most recent issue I received had a collection of cool spy gadgets to build, from a pressure switch alarm made with a clothes-pin, to a laser communicator that allows you to send your voice over the beam from a laser pointer.

Make: Magazine has articles on projects that other "Makers" have developed, such as a hovercraft chair; and on interesting things that people do, such as the article on the man who collects "Magic Lanterns" from the 1800s. I even find myself looking through the advertising pages--something I never do with other magazines--because the advertisements are for such cool stuff (rare earth magnets, science kits, robot controllers, etc...)!

This is a magazine that anyone who loves to tinker will absolutely love.Get more detail about MAKE: Technology on Your Time.

Cheap ARTnews

my mother gifted me a one-year subscription to ARTnews at the end of june, and my first issue has just arrived today, july 20th. i wish i could claim excitement, but i am looking at the june issue of ARTnews, out for probably two months now (seeing as how most periodicals come out in the two weeks before their date). i feel like there is a massive stack of magazines mildewing in one of amazon's warehouses, and i just helped recycle one of those. . . . maybe i should try to sell my old phone books on amazon's subscription site next.

i know amazon's profits are down with the recession, but that is no excuse to assume a profit-over-product attitude towards the customer.

i will not order another subscription through amazon, nor will i recommend it to my friends. Get more detail about ARTnews.

Buying ShopSmart

I consider this magazine to be the feminine version of Consumer Reports. The articles are condensed versions of most that can be found in the regular Consumer Reports mag as well as the website. But these are mostly "female" related items, bras, saving at the grocery, purses, wines, etc. The colors are flashy and eye catching whereas the Consumer Reports magazine itself is more utilitarian.
I really like this magazine because it's shorter to the point articles, I don't have to search long lists to find the top 3 of something. This magazine gives the best recommendations as well as those not recommended. They've left out most of the dirty details to get to that point. The magazine also covers stories about the top 10 tips to save at the grocery, the top 10 websites that save you money, cleaning products you can't live without, the best little black dress and on and on.
They also have articles about single females' necessary household tools, and gives the best recommendations for power/hand tools for women. So that's why I'm saying it's meant for women mostly rather than guys.
It is expensive for 6 issues but in one purchase you could save $20, so to me the magazine is worth the cost. If you want, just get the online consumer reports, website only access and you'd have the best of both worlds.

Purchase History Magazine

Every two months I look forward to reading History Magazine. I've been a subscriber for years and I always feel pleasantly surprised by the variety of topics covered. In every issue I read about topics that had never occurred to me in a historical sense.

The articles are not long, they are plainly written, and there are plenty of pictures. This is NOT a scholarly journal of history. In general the articles are not written by historians (often freelance writers) and I'm sure that most of the "research" is done with relatively few secondary sources. That being said, History Magazine doesn't pretend to be a scholarly journal and there is still much to be enjoyed and learned from reading it. Many of the articles have inspired me to dig deeper into topics that I might never have known about. History Magazine really whets my history appetite.

The topics focus mostly on Western history, from ancient times to the present. However, the magazine does ask its readers to suggest ideas for articles, and I suspect that if enough readers expressed an interest in, say, Oriental or African history, then there would be more of that. Perhaps one day I will offer a suggestion to see how closely they listen to one reader!

To top things off they have a wonderful customer service department, the magazine contains relatively few advertising pages so you don't have to search for the articles, each issue has 10-15 articles of great variety, and they have the best guarantee of any magazine I know of: you can cancel your subscription at any time without hassles. But if you enjoy history, you won't want to cancel. I have hundreds of "real" history books, but this is my favorite magazine. The story of people in the world is endlessly fascinating.

One more note: Every year or so I try an issue of that other world history magazine for laypeople, BBC History, which contains articles written by "real" historians. But for reasons I can't fully explain I just can't seem to enjoy it enough to subscribe (I won't try to explain here, and I'm not criticizing it). I'm pointing this out for those who might want to look at each of these magazines and decide for themselves whether they prefer one or both. Get more detail about History Magazine.

Order Guideposts - Large Print ed

I love this magazine, but it is cheaper on the Guideposts website. It's only 9.97 plus .97 cents for shipping for twelve issues. On here, it's 16.97 for one year. In fact, on their website, you can get TWO years for 17.97 there...just one dollar more. Save yourself some money and don't deal with Amazon on this one!!!
