TV Guide This instant

Don't believe the 4- 6 weeks shown as the time it takes to start a subscription. I waited for 8 weeks without seeing a single issue of TV guide. Called the subscription service yesterday and was told I should have received my first issue last week. The customer service person forwarded my complaint for an "investigation". Today I received a phone call and was told it would be another 3 weeks before my subscription would begin. What a joke!Get more detail about TV Guide.

Lowest Price Islands (1-year)

I used to be a subscriber of this magazine, believing it would have some interesting articles about islands - boy was I wrong. You could think the folks at this magazine are illiterate, and are only thinking about the money. All there is to this magazine are loads and loads, pages beyond pages of advertisement. Not even interesting advertisements but more for the rich and wealthy. In between are a few nice photos, and maybe they throw in a couple of articles, which can all be finished in about 7 minutes. No need to say, I cancelled my subscription.Get more detail about Islands (1-year).

Low Price Archaeology

I ordered this magazine subscription as a birthday present for my father. He is an armchair archaeologist and has thoroughly enjoyed reading this magazine. It has great world coverage of different events without being so academic as to bore the lay reader. The articles are thorough and interesting. I can't say that archaeology has interested me in the past, but I find myself looking forward to each magazine and read it cover to cover. I definitely recommend this magazine.Get more detail about Archaeology.

Save Garden & Gun

This is a top of the line literary magazine with attractions for both men and women. The writing is top notch professional. There are articles on shotguns, knives, gardening, homes and cooking, all slanted toward those who live or have lived in the southern United States. You WILL not understand nor like this magazine if you are north of Virginia or west of Texas. You will NOT like this magazine if you are on a deer stand the first day of deer season and love it. You will NOT like this magazine if you are an anti-gun liberal, although it is a non-political publication. You WILL like this magazine if you like good literature and want information about good places to visit and eat. There are errors in writing however that lead me to believe that the proof readers and/or editors live in New York City. (Clinton, Mississippi, home of Barry Hannah, is not north of Jackson, but west. An apparent mix-up with Canton, Mississippi, which is north). Part of the fun is looking for the errors, which are not numerous, but do exist. This magazine takes the place of the now yankee-ized Southern Living, and improves on it greatly.Get more detail about Garden & Gun.

Cheapest Kids Discover

After receiving our first issue of this mag..and finding what I consider a brochure NOT a magazine (there are only like 5 pages).I decided it definitely wasn't worth my time or money (national geographic kids is so much better) I ignored my chance to renew. I didn't renew and now nasty letters keep coming to my home saying they are sending the account to credit bureau and threats to take legal action..OVER a magazine worth about 50 cents..hummm..I would NOT order from this company or have anything to do with this..and if they LIKE legal action they are going to get it if they put anything on my credit report!

I am surprised this is happening to others and wouldn't have known if I hadn't read all the reviews. BUYER BEWARE!Get more detail about Kids Discover.

Buying Veranda (2-year)

This is my most favorite magazine and I receive all the home magazines. The pages are beautiful, the contents of every issue is wonderful. I save every one of them so I can go back to reference or just to curl up with again on a rainy day and dream of my next home project. You won't be sorry. This also is a great gift for a friend that has everything.Get more detail about Veranda (2-year).

Buy Girls' Life Magazine

I first got GL last year as a 13th birthday gift. As a homeschooler for the past few years, I find it most interesting for its unwittingly revealing information about the life of the "average" girl today.
One of the best examples is the magazine's handling of boys. Their usual topics (such as kissing, understanding your "BF", and "getting the guy") are not healthy for most 10-year-old girls to be spending their time thinking about. For 13 and up, it may be interesting and helpful. However, it deserves a caution for parents concerned about this.
Another common topic is fashion. While I did not find the clothing objectionable (although very expensive!), the makeup is far overdone. They dedicate at least a page per issue on all things makeup, be it eyeshadow or lip gloss or eyeliner or even foundation. The use of eyeshadow on the models is ridiculous - they can best be compared to traffic lights.
The focus on celebrities is maddening. Every issue has yet another "star" on it, and the magazine's favorite myth is "Celebrities: They're Just Like You!" Talented people can be great role models. However, they often have to deal with different issues and lead different lives. Why not feature more "wholesome" role models?
The last complaint is their frequent use of "teen speak". The entire thing is barely decipherable to my esteemed mother. For me, it was difficult at first - rather like learning another language. Their use of BF for boyfriend, BFF/bestie for best friend, and 'rent for parent barely is the tip of the iceberg. It does considerably abate once one leaves the Fashion section, after which they adopt a less perky and annoying tone.
I do commend GL for its handling of tough topics. I never got one about teen pregnancy, but it did have important subjects such as depression, relationship abuse, and drug abuse. Appropriate for 10-year-olds? Probably not. But for the 13-and-up crowd, it's crucial stuff.
Also good is their "Healthy You" program. It doesn't cover losing weight, but just staying in shape and eating healthy. This isn't as good for younger girls, but good habits are never too early.

BOTTOM LINE: Girls' Life really depends on your outlook on parenting and what is healthy for your daughter. Many parents may find that 10-and-up is more along the lines of 13-and-up. I encourage prospective subscribers to take a look at the website: [...]. It offers a lot of insight on the paper-and-ink form. I hope Girls' Life can improve and become a more healthy and helpful source for many girls.Get more detail about Girls' Life Magazine.

Purchase Conde Nast Traveler (1-year)

...but they are not. Like every other travel magazine, this one reads like a sales pitch from cover to cover. Every article describes a perfectly heavenly place to visit. No mention of overcrowding, bad value, and so forth. I don't expect the places I visit to be perfect. But I would like to have an idea what I am getting into. This magazine does not deliver. Just to be fair, none of its competitors do either.Get more detail about Conde Nast Traveler (1-year).

Order Interview (1-year)

I have been sucked in to getting this magazine twice for subscriptions simply because it was so cheap. Both times I found it to be just awful. If I found one interview in it that I was interested in it was lucky. And then the concept of having a famous person interview another famous person? Well that sounds like a novel concept but it usually really stinks and the interviews and interviewer prove to be inept. I gave it a second chance and it still does nothing for me. They will not get a third chance once this subscription runs out. Get more detail about Interview (1-year).

Where To Buy Running Times

This is a magazine about runners (i.e. not joggers) for runners. After ordering through Amazon I received my first issue in about 3 weeks: perfect. Oh, and I have the Amazon credit card, so my gift certificate afforded me the magazine subscription for free. For two years! That's hard to beat.Get more detail about Running Times.

Shop For The Atlantic

I started reading The Atlantic in 2004. Back then The Atlantic provided insightful and interesting articles covering Iraq and Afghanistan, and occasionally included some fiction.

In the last five years, I have witnessed the decline of this great magazine. The Atlantic has abandoned its literary roots by eliminating the fiction section from its monthly publication. Instead fiction is now published in an annual issue purchased on the newsstand. The quality of magazine has declined since The Atlantic moved its offices from Boston to Washington D.C. Recent covers have included tacky and cheesy headlines designed to capture attention and are more appropriate for a tabloid than The Atlantic. Examples have included

- The Britney Show
- The Passion of Alec Baldwin
- If Kim Jong Il Used Facebook
