The New Yorker (2-year) Decide Now

You simply cannot find a contemporary American magazine that delivers a better and more satisfying combination of political insight, current events, humor and arts. Despite its name, the magazine is not Manhattan-centered. Despite its image, it is not a stodgy relic from another generation but very current and very topical. Try it. Skip straight to Talk of the Town and you will be hooked.Get more detail about The New Yorker (2-year).

Metropolitan Home Right now

Initially I loved this magazine - the incredible interiors, the beautiful photography - but quickly grew disenchanted. I find very little variance among the issues. The houses or apartments shown all seem to share the same characteristics - for example very modern and open, large floor to ceiling windows. The furniture and artwork seem to fall within a very limited set of choices. Quite frankly, there is lack of imagination here. Additionally, it is not useful for those of us who love modern design but own more `traditionally' structured houses and condos. Get more detail about Metropolitan Home.

Lowest Price People en Espanol (1-year)

I have been renewing my subscription to People en Espanol for over 3 years now through Amazon. I just happened to visit my grandmother (September 2009) and ask her how she liked her magazines. I didn't see them out anywhere in her stash of reading materials. She said that she hadn't received one since October 2008. I immediately called the magazine's customer service. They stated that they had incorrectly recorded the address using Avenue instead of Drive (as listed in the order) and the magazine was noted as undeliverable since October 2008. They agreed to extend my subscription for the 11 month difference. Don't get me wrong, this is a great magazine, I was just disappointed that they failed to notify me (at my billing address, which is different than the shipping address) that my magazine "gift" was undeliverable. Thank goodness for grandmother's memory. I will not renew this year.Get more detail about People en Espanol (1-year).

Buying Consumer Reports Money Adviser

It took a little while to get this product (maybe 2 weeks). They indicated when I subscribed it would take longer so I wasn't too disappointed. I read through the magazine and it reads much like the regular Consumer Reports magazine - it appears to be unbiased and trustworthing information that I can trust. I do wish it was a little longer but for the price I believe it is fair.Get more detail about Consumer Reports Money Adviser.

Buy Babybug

I was very disappointed with this magazine. We got a subscription based on all the great reviews, but were unhappy with it. Each magazine has a story about Kim and her stuffed rabbit, Carrots. There is noting special about these simple stories. Then the rest of the pages were poems, nursery rhymes, or stories about a common theme. The were mostly poor quality writing. I felt for the cost of the magazine, we could have bought collections of better written poetry for children. As well as better stories. Don't waist your money!Get more detail about Babybug.

Purchase Utne

I ordered this in February of 2009 and it is now July 19th and I have not received an issue. When I sent an email to complain I was told I would get 6 issues free as an apology. I replied that I appreciate the free issues but I would also like to receive the 6 issues I PAID for. Well I then received an email telling me I'd be receiving 12 issues in the next year which would be dandy if this was a monthly publication but since it is only published every other month it means I'm going to be getting two copies of the same issue. I had trouble in the past with receiving Utne so I thought I'd take another chance --- look like it was a bad idea.

I don't know if it's a problem on Utne's end or Amazon's magazine service's end, but I don't plan on getting a subscription from either in the near future.Get more detail about Utne.

Shop For Country Living - England

The US version of Country Living should aspire to the quality of content and articles offered in the UK version. I suspect there may be a demographics issue -- in the US, the notion of "Country" has been hijacked by animals (ie: geese, ducks, cows, rabbits) wearing trailing bows, grape-vine wreaths with plastic flowers hot-glued on, and tole painted milk jugs. When I think American "Country Living" I think "Buy One Mobile Home, Get One Free: Furniture Included". In the UK, Country Living feels a bit more authentic and less kitsch-y. There are great articles about animal husbandry, local food initiatives (as well as guidance on DIY food production), gorgeous old restored farmhouses and the shabby chic furniture that fills them, charming commentaries and columns detailing the quirky and quaint vignettes that make up a *life actually lived in the countryside* and filled with country pursuits. Even the format (large) and quality of the paper (glossy, as opposed to National Enquirer quality) is superior. I'm a firm believer in "You get what you pay for," and in this case, that is certainly true.Get more detail about Country Living - England.

Import Tuner

I placed a subscription without realizing that this was a MONTHLY magazine. I cancelled my subscription shortly after placing it (but LONG before expected first deliverty date of 6 weeks in the future); after finding out that i would soon be changing locations; complicating a subscription.

I received a credit to my account, and was assured the 'subscription to be' had been cancelled. However i continue to receive requests to rate the 'delivery' of the product/ 'the product itself'; of which i have NEVER received.

Once i finalize locations, i may yet resume prescription to this magazine. Until then, i am left only confused...

Instinct Magazine Review

This is an excellent magazine for people who just enjoy a little camp yet not too much. The fashion layouts are outstanding and they are attainable (not too far out of the pocket reach; yet current styles). I enjoy reading the magazine when it comes from cover to cover. There are plenty of magazines on the market which cater to nudity and sex. This is not one of them. I think this is what gives the magazine its charm.

Click Top Quality

I have been a fan of Cricket magazines since I first subscribed to Babybug when my daughter was a baby. She is now 3.5 years-old and I currently subscribe to Ladybug and Click. Ladybug takes off from Babybug in that it has stories and poems that are illustrated in full-color and the text is engaging for young and aspiring readers.

Click is a magazine for preschoolers and beginning readers who are curious about the world we live in - the magazine explores different themes in every issue, for e.g. transportation etc. The explanations are brief so kids will not get bored, and there are plenty of pictures and illustrations to capture young children's imagination. I found that when I took the trouble to sit with my daughter and discuss the concepts being explored in the magazine [asking leading questions, getting her response to the pictures, providing her opportunities to formulate her own opinions], the result was a rewarding session.

I would recommend Click for preschoolers and beginner readers. It is a great companion to Ladybug [which focuses on poems and stories] and both provide a good balance for children in terms of exposure to language and knowledge. The magazines are also ad-free, which is a great bonus!Get more detail about Click.

Discount Fitness Rx For Men

FitnessRx used to be a good magazine for those who take their training and health seriously. I say "used to be" because the magazine has deteriorated from serious periodical to typical muscle magazine over the past few years. What made me become a subscriber to FitnessRx was the fact that they were diligent about citing clinical research in their training and nutrition articles. This gave their pieces a weight and substance that is notably absent in the Weider/mainstream fitness magazines. It seemed like they were truly trying to do something different with this publication, to create something for the serious trainer who left the babes and barbells set behind about two presidents ago.

Over the past year, though, FitnessRx has descended from articles covering the latest research into conjugated linoleic acids to how to get a body that will help you score. The magazine has become exactly what people hate about the Weider publications. Articles about sex, MMA fighters and bikini models now make it more an homage to adolescence than anything resembling an attempt to disseminate relevant information about health and fitness. One article in a recent issue had the title--I'm not making this up--'Will You Die In Bed Having Sex With A Hot Babe?' Seriously. The crude language and mistakes that litter the text make it clear that a professional editorial staff is not currently in the budget. What's worse, FitnessRx is just as guilty as the Weider mags of blindly pumping supplements in the name of sponsorship. This may help their advertising revenues, but it does little to help the bewildered reader who is trying to make some sense of the innumerable unregulated products on the market.

Bottom line: if you're serious about training, save your money and take your cues from authors like Poliquin from whom you might actually learn something worthwhile.

Cheap American Artist

After reading a review here mentioning subscription issues I went directly to American Artists web site and ordered a subscription. That was November 23, 2005 and now Feb. 10, 2006 still no magazine. When I finally complained I got a request to send my credit info again to vnu@espcomp.com. Can't say from looking at that address that I have confidence I was communicating with American Artist or a magazine publisher. Would you send your credit info...I think not. Purchase Bust

I LOVE, love, love this mag! One of the best things about this book is that there is no "right way" to be a chick these days, no ideal lifestyle, body, hobby, living space, career choice etc. The vibe in this magazine is that we are all diverse, intelligent, free-thinking, awesome women who enjoy all the different aspects of what it is to be a lady these days (crafts, fashion, cooking, motherhood, partnership, sex, music, movies, books, world politics etc). There is no judgment for the choices we've made (children/no children, career/stay home, partner/single, gay/straight etc), it's never derogatory or anti-male. I wish I would have had this magazine in high school it would have helped in SO many ways. I say get that subscription and while you're at it get yourself some back issues!Get more detail about Bust.

Order Vogue - French Edition

I ordered French Vogue through Amazon in May. After five months and several phone calls and e-mails to the distributor, I had to ask for a refund. The magazine never came. Each time I asked about it I was told that it takes a long time for French Vogue subscriptions to come through because of the time and language differences. (Absurd.) The American distributor also blamed the many vacation days Europeans take. I got a kick out of that. But I didn't enjoy how quick the distributor was to charge my credit card and how slow the company was to address my concerns.

I would have loved to read French Vogue. Too bad I couldn't. Get more detail about Vogue - French Edition.

Photo Techniques

The magazin itself is a good one, I found the tutorials very useful, it's not like some magazine with heavy glossy paper and what they call it "products reviews" this one have a realy technical tutorials that you would't find anywhere else and the price is right..BUT I can't say the samething about the process of subscribing to the magazin, after more than 8 weeks of sending my subscribe I recived nothing and after writing to amazon about that they told me "your magazine was due to start with the May/June 2009 issue. The publisher will extend your subscription for 1 issue, the next issue you will receive is the July/August 2009 issue by June 12th."
not even a single word of apology or an offer to pay back for my loss, make youself a favour and buy the issue at the time from your local book store, no need to subscribe it was a waste of money and time for me.

Fine Cooking Top Quality

I agree with every single review here that gives Fine Cooking five stars. It was always my favorite food magazine -- with the focus on proper technique, rather than upon fancy pictures put together by food "stylists," rather than cooks.

"Was" is the operative word though. This year Fine Cooking felt it had to "fix" something that was nowhere near "broke" and they turned FC into exactly the "food stylist" type of magazine that had sent me into the arms of Fine Cooking to begin with. The new format is all style over substance; indeed, there are so many "pretty" stylized pictures that it is now difficult to read -- the text gets lost.

FC also lost the unique personal style from the original FC -- the old format had these simple articles, oftentimes with a cook giving you the take on a single technique or ingredient. The cook was right there with you, with their hands on the food, and their smiling face beaming at you the beginning of the article. It looked like real food being cooked in front of you by a real person, rather than stylized food being glossed up with shellac before a hot camera.

Alas, that is all gone now. There are still a few good recipes, such as the excellent "Grill Braising" article by Bruce Aidells (my guess is that Bruce was under contract before they changed the format). But why wasn't Bruce in the shots, instead of these picture-perfect creations? And why did the text have to be so difficult to read?

I can say I am not alone in my disdain; others I know here were also heartbroken when the format changed, and the online blogs and FC's own blog included many angered by the change. Some did like it -- but then there are lots of people who do like these "stylized" publications, I'm just not one of them. Its just not what I looked for in Fine Cooking. My subscription has now lapsed, although I hope they bring back the old format (my guess is that they lost many subscribers).

In any event -- I thought that this review was necessary to give fair warning to those reading the OLD reviews about the OLD FC format. "New" is not always necessarily "improved."Get more detail about Fine Cooking.

Backwoods Home Magazine Buy Now

I discovered this magazine after discovering that it was the home of one of my favorite writers, Claire Wolfe. Who would have thought that I'd find it to house another woman who would soon rival Ms. Wolfe for my affection- Jackie Clay? Every word either one of these two write- I'll read it. Maybe it isn't the greatest of literary quality, but hard headed straight shooting American women are always worth listening to. Feminists in the best sense of the word- hike up your britches and slaughter the cow themselves, feminists!

Massad Ayoob is the best technical writer on guns out there, end of story.

The editorial bent is supposedly conservative/libertarian, but I'd suggest that anti-authoritarian communitarian would be a more apt description. The mag doesn't truck much with the feds, but is big on neighbors. A very sensible approach.
