This is a wonderful magazine with NO advertising of commercial products. All our kids like to look at this magazine, it has Real photos, and keeps the interest of the older kids (8-10-12) It's not gender specific, my girls and boys both like it. Big Back Yard is good too, but better for the 4-8 year old set. Ranger Rick is great for independent readers. And if you're ok with them learning about environmental issues from a "go green" perspective it is fine for them to read unsupervised. Get more detail about Ranger Rick.
