The New Yorker (2-year) Decide Now

You simply cannot find a contemporary American magazine that delivers a better and more satisfying combination of political insight, current events, humor and arts. Despite its name, the magazine is not Manhattan-centered. Despite its image, it is not a stodgy relic from another generation but very current and very topical. Try it. Skip straight to Talk of the Town and you will be hooked.Get more detail about The New Yorker (2-year).

Metropolitan Home Right now

Initially I loved this magazine - the incredible interiors, the beautiful photography - but quickly grew disenchanted. I find very little variance among the issues. The houses or apartments shown all seem to share the same characteristics - for example very modern and open, large floor to ceiling windows. The furniture and artwork seem to fall within a very limited set of choices. Quite frankly, there is lack of imagination here. Additionally, it is not useful for those of us who love modern design but own more `traditionally' structured houses and condos. Get more detail about Metropolitan Home.

Lowest Price People en Espanol (1-year)

I have been renewing my subscription to People en Espanol for over 3 years now through Amazon. I just happened to visit my grandmother (September 2009) and ask her how she liked her magazines. I didn't see them out anywhere in her stash of reading materials. She said that she hadn't received one since October 2008. I immediately called the magazine's customer service. They stated that they had incorrectly recorded the address using Avenue instead of Drive (as listed in the order) and the magazine was noted as undeliverable since October 2008. They agreed to extend my subscription for the 11 month difference. Don't get me wrong, this is a great magazine, I was just disappointed that they failed to notify me (at my billing address, which is different than the shipping address) that my magazine "gift" was undeliverable. Thank goodness for grandmother's memory. I will not renew this year.Get more detail about People en Espanol (1-year).

Cheapest Official Xbox Magazine [with DVD] (1-year)

I don't want to spend much time writing this review. But anyways...

OXM is a decent magazine, comparing Amazon's price to what you pay retail, is night and day. The magazine is "definitely" not worth $8-10 per issue. The $3 or less, that Amazon charges is about where it should be. But yeah, I can't really even say this magazine is worth $3 an issue. It's about half-filled with advertising, and the other half is only about 30 pages of information that's already available on the web.Get more detail about Official Xbox Magazine [with DVD] (1-year).

Cheap Psychology Today

Yes, the magazine has "risque" covers, but that's to get people to pick it up. And then, hopefully, someone who wouldn't have otherwise read a factual, informational, psychological magazine will read it. I feel the stories are designed to be interesting to a wide range of people, and they keep the diction simple enough so that even if you're not a psych student you can make sense of it. I also think the stories bring relevance to psychology - it's not all about people with disorders and treatments, etc - it relates to day-to-day thought processes and behavior. Besides, if you're a psychology student, you shouldn't be expecting this magazine to substitute a textbook or published study. I'm a psychology student, and I find the articles refreshing - they're informative, relevant to society, thought-provoking, and teach without shoving theory after theory down your throat.Get more detail about Psychology Today.

Buying Muse

I would recommend Muse to ANYONE who has a creative mind and enjoys learning about a wide variety of interesting subjects. I started reading the magazine back when it was new in 1997, and read every issue until I went away to college. It is not an exaggeration to describe Muse as my favorite magazine in existence. I wish I had kids so that I could justify the expense of subscribing to it again. There are plenty of magazines out there that are informative, and many that are fun, but none comes close to the perfect combination of those two elements that is achieved with Muse.Get more detail about Muse.

Buy Weight Watchers Magazine

The magazine is great, Amazon customer service is the best, Synapes Services Inc. who the subscription comes from is not worth taking the risk. When I subscribed to Weight Watchers it says that it will take 12 to 16 weeks for your first issue to arrive. Well, I received two OLD issues in one day. One of the issues was outdated by two months. They other issue had been out for over a month. When I contacted Synapes Services Inc., Tracy called and left me a voice message saying "tough, these issues count towards your subscription". I called their number again and NOW their customer service put me in through to Amazon.com customer service and in about 15 minutes the end date for the subscription was changed.

BE VERY WEARY ORDERING FROM SYNAPES SERVICES INC.

Purchase Shape

I started reading Shape back in 03 when I went to college and I wanted to stay on a healthy track. It was great and had tons of fitness articles and helped me perfect my form. Since then its simply become all about beauty and fashion with maybe a little bit of fitness mixed in. And the fashion isn't even that good, who wants to spend $100 on a pair of workout pants? I don't. What is most sad is that its extremely repetitive, it shows the same movements different girl maybe on a beach or in a field somewhere. I'm still trying to figure out why all of a sudden the buff toned models they once had grace the covers have been replaced with frail, thin untoned celebrities. Get more detail about Shape.

Where To Buy Architectural Digest (2-year)

A hit and miss magazine for me, sometimes an issue piques my interest and other issues are almost a waste but I still continue to buy or subscribe to it just for those few really good issues.

Obviously a lot of the articles are written for architects and the rich but the visual images can be inspiring and entertaining much like a trip to an art museum. I'm glad they recognize the artist's and their works which enrich the images, many magazines should follow suit for legal and educational reasons.

BusinessWeek Review

Every week, I look forward to receiving this magazine for its interesting feature articles. The first couple of pages in Businessweek provide a summary into current events that have occurred in the past week. Each issue features one or two articles that provide insight, and new idea into forces that will change the business environment. I love the coverage that Businessweek focuses on the emerging economies of China, and India.

Hopefully, the recent sale of Businessweek to Bloomberg will bring the same quality that I have come to expect from this magazine.

Pros
- In-depth feature articles
- Good summary of weekly news
- Moderate viewpoint

Cons
- Not as analytical or data driven as the economist Get more detail about BusinessWeek.

Wood (1-year) Best Quality

I have subscribed to several woodworking magazines over the years and have found WOOD to be the least informative of the group. I am usually excited when the woodworking magazines arrive in the mail and read them several times over. The only one that tends to get discarded after a single read through is WOOD. I find the quality of writing to be marginal and the projects to be less desirable to build. They have a good mix of projects (ranging in skill level and time to build) which is good, but they dont motivate me to go out and build them. I prefer Woodsmith and Popular Woodworking. SPIN Decide Now

I enjoy reading SPIN magazine, for its interesting articles about music, and also it helps inform me of new upcoming bands, as well as existing music that I should listen to. SPIN magazine is oriented towards the mainstream reader like myself, who want to read about bands that are in the mainstream, or just about to become popular. With a circulation of over 400,000 readers SPIN magazine is no longer a small indie magazine focusing on local banks, and counter-culture articles. I have noticed that some of the other reviewers are pretentious and look down upon those who do listen to mainstream music on the radio.

Discount The Economist

First, my mini-disclaimer. I am 25 year old with a short attention span (I'm starting to think I may have mild ADD and plan to chase that).

I really am interested in the news - not the trashy tabloid news or news with an agenda of it's own, but solid news that will make me a better person because I understand what is happening in the world (outside the U.S. as well as in). The Economist is packed with a lot of news that you simply won't find anywhere else. With everything that has gone down in the last year with the economic crisis, as well as the continuing turmoil in the Middle East, I wanted a reliable news source that I could depend on that would help me become more aware of current events. For me, The Economist is not easy to read through as the news and information is very detailed... but such details are necessary if you care to know the full picture. Some of the stories I do not care about, and I do skip. Many of the stories that are touched upon will be reviewed again later with updates and such, which is nice. If you don't have a good basis of what GDP means and other basic economic terms, I suggest you read a basic econ. book first, just so you will understand some of the articles a bit better - you will get more out them. Overall, if you read the Economist for a few months and dedicate the time it takes each week (it does take dedication from you), you will develop a much better understanding of the world. With so many people my age completely apathetic to the events at all levels - local, national and international, I like the idea that I can actually explain to a certain extent, why the economy is the way it is, why gas prices are going up or down, or what kind of an influence a specific decision by some politician may have on all of us. While a subscription to the magazine is pricey (I got the subscription off the Economist website), I feel it is worth every single penny.Get more detail about The Economist.

Where To Buy Harper's Magazine

I'm a conservative (but lately more of a libertarian) but Harper's is my favorite magazine. It has honest political commentary, hard to find these days, that I don't always agree with but concede that the arguments are often compelling. The short stories are usually great, and the book reviews better than most. A favorite feature is "Findings" a short list of recent and bizarre scientific findings. I read it aloud to my family (and yes they enjoy it and look forward to each issue, too). Sometimes the editorials are a bit cynical but they are almost as likely to trash the Democrats as the Republicans (a healthy sign since I feel both parties have been co-opted by special interests).

You will also get news here without commentary, such as transcripts from Guantanamo, bizarre and revealing emails, and recently discovered correspondence from unlikely political leaders. All without commentary so you avoid the usual media attempt at controlling your opinion.

Sure, I might occasionally get mad at or ignore some authors, but I've found life isn't as fun without this magazine.Get more detail about Harper's Magazine.

Clean Eating

I first learned of Clean Eating magazine when I randomly picking up a copy of Oxygen magazine. I'm a fairly active person, but had been in the fitness/nutrition doldrums for a while. Food was boring me, frankly. Healthy food most especially. I dreaded mealtimes because of my indecision and lack of inspiration, which had only been made worse in recent years by the addition of a fussy British husband who has very particular ideas about what constitutes "real food". I was eating out about 90% of the time, and not particularly enjoying the experience of cooking and eating in.

Enter Clean Eating (CE) magazine. The few CE snippets I was able to glean from that copy of Oxygen (along with some great tips I got from the CE website and fan blogs) was enough to kick-start my new addiction. The recipes are fun, simple, tasty, and HEALTHY. I'd resigned myself that despite my fairly active lifestyle and healthy food choices, I was at my body's "comfortable maintenance weight". 2 months of Clean Eating later, I've effortlessly lost 5 lbs. I'm hardly ever hungry (and if I am, it's because I wasn't paying attention and skipped a snack). My energy levels are through the roof. The recipes have kept me and my picky husband interested all the while.

With most magazines I end up clipping one or two recipes. I *gut* Clean Eating... everything is super-tasty, and a totally feasible amount of effort, even on a weeknight. After experimenting with 30+ recipes, I've only had one "meh" experience. Those odds are as good or better than any other recipe resource I've tried. I've even heard about one reader who uses the magazines as her cookbooks!

Which I guess leads me to the bottom-line: health aside, these recipes are just GOOD. I never find myself thinking, "Oh, this was nice... but would have been so much tastier if I could have used XYZ." Nope. This is real-deal yummy eating, folks. Part of me wants to shout about Clean Eating mag from the mountain tops, but part of me wants to be greedy and keep my new secret weapon safe. So as I said... shhhh! ;-)Get more detail about Clean Eating.

Loaded with workout tips and guides (even if you think you know it all). Focuses on working out and not on the normal crud that fills the others - if I wanna know "10 pickup lines that work 90% of the time, every time" then I can pickup one of those other magazines that by the title you'd think would be focusing on working out, but is filled with fluff! Outside This instant

I used to love this magazine and subscribed on and off for years. But I finally realized it holds nothing for me anymore except 1 or 2 good photographs and sometimes the fitness section. Almost all the articles are about sports that I could never afford to get even mediocre at, gear, and - increasingly and alarmingly - hot & trendy outdoor sports stars. The tone of the magazine is kind of breathless, often kind of snide.

It's not all bad - I do like the monthly fitness section, and sometimes there are great articles and useful travel info. But now I just browse it at the checkout stand if it's a good issue, I'll buy it there.Get more detail about Outside.

Highlights High Five Immediately

My son is now 6 years old & he's been getting this magazine for the past 2 years. It's been perfect for his age. We enjoy reading all of the stories together & he really enjoys the activities. Hidden pictures & finding what's wrong in the pictures are in almost every magazine & he never gets tired of it. The reading level has been great for his age. He helps read along with me. The stories aren't too long that he gets bored or restless.

There does seem to be some Spanish in every magazine as well & although it's not too much (normally just in 1 story) I think at this age that it's too difficult to introduce another language. We're trying to teach them to read English at this point. I think it would be great if High Five had a Spanish version for those that want it but for those that don't need it I think they're too young to be introduced. With that being said, I have no problems with this magazine & I think it's great for any preschooler & I highly recommend it.Get more detail about Highlights High Five.

Garden Design (1-year) Best Quality

Garden Design Magazine is a publication dedicated to the planting, care, and display of plants, shrubs, trees, flowers, etc. This magazine ranks as one of the best known publication about general landscaping and it offers some nice ideas for shrubbery, plants, and general enhancements that can add greatly to your home's curb appeal.

One fact that might surprise first time readers is that Garden Design Magazine is not a magazine about gardening per se, i.e, planting vegetables and taking care of them. Rather, this is a magazine about landscaping, backyard entertainment, and related topics and even though I do not possess a green thumb, I still find Garden Design Magazine a publication to my liking. The main reason I like this publication is because I enjoy the different ideas offered and I like the fact that it talks about more than just plants. This magazine is also interested in helping you redesign your patio and look for new and fun ways to entertain guests in your backyard. This is why I tend to turn quickly to the departments and featured articles that talk about new products for enjoying the outside of your home and the different ways you can redesign or enhance your patio to make it more attractive and more guest- friendly.

Garden Design Magazine contains many attractive photos of lush garden landscapes and it is great for discovering new and better ways to select trees, shrubs, plants, and flowers for general home improvement. However, there is one fact about Garden Design Magazine that could surprise some readers: It isn't a how- to magazine, in the usual sense. It doesn't offer step by step instructions or charts/tables to follow. Instead, it is a visual magazine with articles that stimulate the imagination.

Garden Design Magazine is written more for the affluent homeowner who has a large yard and plenty of money to burn. It is true that most anyone can benefit from the articles in this magazine and the many design ideas. But the features, new products, landscaping designs, etc., that will stand out in your memory are usually those that feature a large, expensive home with a beautifully manicured lawn. Many of these design ideas and entertainment options are quite attractive, but the money necessary to transform one's home in this manner could easily cost several thousand and even tens of thousands of dollars. Yes, there is some good, practical advice in Garden Design Magazine, but there is also a good deal of fantasy.

Garden Design Magazine is a good publication that I will continue to enjoy for the forseeable future. My favorite sections are those involving patio design ideas and entertainment suggestions because these are the ones I relate to best. I also like the photography and the general presentation, which is very classy and elegant. It adds up toa nice magazine with many features for all to enjoy. Your Big Backyard Buy Now

Your Big Backyard is one of several excellent magazines issued by the National Wildlife Federation and it ranks as a great choice of reading and learning material for the targeted age group, which is between three and seven years of age. This magazine aims to educate children on the fascinating world of animals and it accomplishes this through its fun games, colorful pictures, fact sheets, and learning materials to stimulate interest in the great outdoors.

This magazine is aimed at learning and building an interest in children about wildlife and it succeeds on all counts. The cover picture on each issue of Your Big Backyard always features an animal and there are always a few accompanying pages of facts and pictures about the featured animal, including a poster in the middle of each issue that children will enjoy tacking to their bedroom wall. When the magazine isn't offering facts and photos, it is entertaining children with its many games and other enjoyable learning tools and activities. Some of the fun material each month includes suggestions for outdoor games involving wildlife, animal- related crafts, and a fun guide that includes suggestions for songs, books, and more.

Your Big Backyard is mostly a visually- stimulating magazine, and this makes it perfect for children in the target age group. Kids will like learning the facts about different animals, but what they will like most of all are the pictures. The photography includes animals in their actual habitat, including close- up shots that help to educate children on specific traits of different animals. Besides the photographs, there are also some drawings of animals and there is even a section that displays some of the works of art drawn by little kids who submit their drawings and colorings to Your Big Backyard with the hope of getting published. Children will like the visual aspects more than anything and they will often marvel at the interesting animals depicted in each issue.

The National Wildlife Federation publishes many fine magazines and Your Big Backyard is one of its best. It teaches children about animals, is loaded with great visuals for children, and offers games and other interactive tools to encourage quality time spent between parent and child. It is an educational read that earns an easy recommendation.
